In early 2016, as Nuuk prepared to host the Arctic Winter Games, Danish company PRO-trans A/S was hard at work in Søften, crafting 52 specialized containers. These units were designed to provide shelter and amenities for athletes and spectators facing Greenland’s harsh March temperatures, which often dipped below -10°C at night.
Facilities Tailored for the North
The containers included 15 toilet units equipped with hot and cold water, seven shower facilities, and additional spaces for ski waxing, rifle storage, and warming areas for officials and audiences. This infrastructure was crucial for the comfort and efficiency of the Games, which featured 15 disciplines ranging from alpine skiing to indoor sports like basketball and volleyball.
Local Efforts with Global Impact
PRO-trans A/S emphasized local craftsmanship, employing workers from Favrskov Municipality to construct and insulate the containers. The units were shipped in stages via Royal Arctic Line from Aalborg to Nuuk, a journey taking approximately ten days. The deployment in Greenland was personally managed by Carstensen and Dennis Visholm, underscoring the team’s active involvement.
A Legacy of Collaboration
This initiative showcased the importance of international cooperation and local expertise in supporting large-scale events in challenging environments. The successful implementation of these facilities contributed to the overall success of the Arctic Winter Games 2016, leaving a lasting impression on participants and spectators alike.
