Greenland’s Journey into the Heart of the Arctic Winter Games

Greenland, known locally as Kalaallit Nunaat, has become more than just a participant in the Arctic Winter Games; it is now one of the event’s most recognizable and respected contributors. Over the years, the country has gone from sending small delegations to co-hosting and, in 2016, fully organizing the Games in Nuuk.

From Participant to Host

Since joining the Games in the 1990s, Greenland has competed in various disciplines – from traditional Arctic sports to modern team events. Its athletes have demonstrated strong cultural pride and competitive spirit, often excelling in events like snowshoeing, biathlon, and Dene Games.

But Greenland’s influence extends beyond medals. As co-host in 2002 (with Iqaluit) and sole host in 2016, the country proved its ability to organize international events with professionalism and heart.

Cultural Connections

The AWG is about more than sport. For Greenland, the event has been a space to showcase Inuit culture through language, music, dance, and storytelling. Hosting the Arctic Winter Games brought Greenland closer to its neighbors and affirmed its place within the broader northern community.

A Lasting Presence

Greenland has always been a warm and steady presence at the Arctic Winter Games, sharing its people, traditions, and kindness year after year. Its presence symbolizes not only geographic strength but also cultural depth.
