Full steam ahead

With a blast of an opening ceremony the Arctic Winter Games 2016 were kicked off Sunday evening. Drum song and rap (simultaneously), rock and choral singing, mask dancing, polka and hiphop.

There was truly something for everyone at the magnificent show in the sports hall Inussivik which was attended by nearly 1,000 spectators and an unknown number of viewers of KNR who transmitted on both direct TV and the internet.

- Amazing, truly amazing. It's the best show I have ever seen, a visibly excited journalist from Alaska said.

Among the audience was His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik, who obviously was also impressed - and probably harvested the evening's biggest applause when he stepped into the hall and waved to the many spectators.

Although there still lacked some of the participants who were delayed in arrival due to the weekend's bad weather, the delegations met at Katuaq and walked in procession to Inussivik where the audience rhythmically clapping them onto the floor in front of the stage. Here they witnessed the famous flame being lit and sent by snowmobile through the town to the square in front Katuaq where it will burn throughout the coming week.
